MOULD – Falling Posture
Bristol three-piece MOULD announce their debut album Hoping As A Coping Mechanism, out July 10 on 5dB Records. Lead single “Falling Posture” is out now, and it’s a good summary of how the band operates: it opens with a blast of noise, settles into a rattling punk number that started life “sounding a bit like The Cribs”, then drops into an unexpected slacker final third. The band call it a “Frankenstein song”, disparate parts bolted together into something that shouldn’t work as well as it does.
Vocalist/bassist Kane Eagle describes the lyric as being about “the pressures of staying positive whilst being bombarded with life’s expectations — delving too deep into overthinking every aspect of your life, getting caught up and stuck in a loop of your own and others’ expectations of what ‘success’ is”. The words land that way too: “Comfortably wasting time / Dismantling all my enthusiasm” opens the song, and “We’re gonna end up like / Everyone else, maybe that’s fine” is the kind of line that hits differently depending on what kind of day you’re having.
The album was written in Bristol, recorded at 5dB Studios in London, and produced by Sean Oakley (Georgia, Sorry), who flew in from LA for the project. MOULD — Joe Sherrin (vocals/guitar), Kane Eagle (vocals/bass), and James Luxton (drums) — describe Hoping As A Coping Mechanism as more focused and paced than their previous work, with a greater emphasis on dynamics, structure, and melody across its 13 tracks. They also note it “starts with a stinking rager”, so the range is real. The album follows BBC 6 Music-playlisted single “Float” from last November. A UK headline tour runs through March.
